Graduate Application Information and Instructions

The Department of Statistics offers two graduate degree programs: Master of Science, including a Data Science track, and Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics.

Applicants applying from outside Stanford must visit Graduate Admissions before beginning the application process for complete application information and instructions.

External Admissions (2020-2021)
PhD: Application opens in September. Deadline: December 3, 2019 (Tuesday). 
MS : Application opens in September. Deadline: December 3, 2019 (Tuesday).
Data Science: Application opens in September. Deadline: December 3, 2019 (Tuesday).


The Graduate Admissions period is open beginning in September each year for applications to be submitted by the published deadlines above (for matriculation beginning in the following academic year - autumn quarter start). After April 15th each year, the Graduate Admissions period is closed, and the online application will reopen the following September.

It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that they meet all eligibility requirements before applying. All application materials, including supporting documents, must be received by the application deadline.


Knight-Hennessy Fellowship
Knight-Hennessy Scholars program is designed to build a multidisciplinary community of Stanford graduate students dedicated to finding creative solutions to the world’s greatest challenges. The program awards up to 100 high-achieving students every year with full funding to pursue a graduate education at Stanford, including the M.S. and Ph.D. in Statistics.

Knight-Hennessy Fellowship Application opens: May 1, 2019.

To be considered, you must apply to Knight-Hennessy Scholars by October 10, 2019, at 1:00pm Pacific Time, and separately apply to the Statistics department by the department/program deadline.

Please note: Determination and notification of Knight-Hennessy awards is separate from department admission.
