The 2017 Class of 24 MacArthur "Geniuses" has been announced, with the inclusion of department chair Candès. The Fellowship is a $625,000, no-strings-attached grant for individuals who have shown exceptional creativity in their work and the promise to do more. The citation describes Emmanuel's work at the interface of applied and theoretical mathematics laying the groundwork for improvements in many devices that make use of signal and image processing methods, with implications in multiple fields. Expressing gratitude for this recognition, he acknowledged student collaborators and other contributors both before and after himself: "To be a link in this chain... it's an amazing feeling."
