Charles M. Stein, extraordinary statistician and anti-war activist

Friends and colleagues shared their memories of Charles for this obituary in the Stanford Report. Numerous citations in the Stanford Daily, spanning the decades, already attest to his lifelong commitment to activism: in May of 1999, a graduate student wrote a letter to the editor that concludes,

"I am glad to read that among the protestors on Tuesday was Emeritus Statistics Prof. Charles Stein. At least this still gives me some hope of conscience in the American public."
