Emmanuel Candès honored with Princess of Asturias Award

Professor Candès is among four laureates chosen to receive Spain's Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research. Presented annually since 1981 with the aim of recognizing work that fosters and advances research in life sciences, medical sciences, earth and space sciences, and technological sciences, the awards are bestowed in eight additional categories by the Princess of Asturias Foundation, encompassing notable achievements in arts, literature, communication, social sciences, and more.

The deliberation process for 2020 was itself notable, as the jury meeting was held via video conference due to the health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic; 48 nominations encompassing 22 different nationalities were considered for this particular award. Finally, this year's cohort was selected for their "immeasurable, ground-breaking contributions to modern theories and techniques of mathematical data and signal processing." Collectively, these advancements were described as constituting the foundations and backbone of the digital age, of medical imaging and diagnosis, and of engineering and scientific research.

In addition to being thrilled with this very special accolade, Emmanuel has said he is honored to be alongside other scientists he admires. We are tremendously proud of him.
