Emmanuel Candès awarded 2014 SIAM Outstanding Paper Prize

A paper written by Professor Candès with colleagues Thomas Strohmer, Yonina  Eldar, and Candès’ graduate student Vladislav Voroninski has been selected as one of three papers to receive the SIAM Outstanding Paper Prize. The prize is awarded annually to outstanding papers published in SIAM journals, and especially emphasizes papers that exhibit originality such as a fresh look at an existing field, or that open up new areas of applied mathematics.

The prize-winning paper, “Phase Retrieval via Matrix Completion," appeared in Issue 1 of SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences (SIIMS) in 2013. It develops a novel framework for phase retrieval, a problem which arises in X-ray crystallography, diffraction imaging, astronomical imaging, and many other applications. The prize will be awarded at the 2014 SIAM Annual Meeting to be held July 7-11 in Chicago.
