Tijana Zrnic returns as Assistant Professor in January

Tijana Zrnic

Tijana will conclude her most recent appointment as Ram and Vijay Shriram Data Science Postdoctoral Fellow under the guidance of Emmanuel J. Candès and return from the winter holidays as our newest Assistant Professor of Statistics with a joint appointment in Management Science and Engineering (MS&E). She received her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences while working with her advisors Moritz Hardt and Michael I. Jordan. In 2024 she was named an EECS Rising Star by MIT, having previously been invited to a "rising stars" event at USC, a symposium on "Frontiers of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence". Most recently Tijana was a featured speaker at the 2025 Stanford Data Science Conference where she presented her seminar, "Scientific Discovery in the Age of Data & AI".

Tijana's research interests are focused on the positive impacts of data-driven technologies, in particular: statistical inference with AI, prediction-powered and active inference, performative prediction and learning in societal contexts, and more generally, mitigating selection bias.

And January will be even busier as she co-organizes the workshop, "Bridging Prediction and Intervention Problems in Social Systems," to be held the 12th through the 16th at Berkeley's Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing.
