Trevor Hastie elected to National Academy of Sciences

The Statistics Department is proud to announce that Professor Hastie has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences this morning, recognized for distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. This significant honor acknowledges the spectacular achievements of our colleague, who understood the opportunities provided by computers for data analysis well in advance of the present explosion of interest. He has moved far ahead of the field by developing novel, powerful, and sophisticated data-fitting procedures that go beyond simple regressions, and by working on ever larger data problems. Trevor has shaped the instruments we use to compute with data, he has introduced a large number of the statistical methods scientists routinely use and, finally, his lectures and books are the basis of training for most of today’s data scientists.
