My research interests center broadly around optimization, statistics, machine learning, and information theory. I like both theoretical analysis and practical algorithms, and have developed some of the statistical learning algorithms in wide use at Google. I like understanding the fundamental limits and difficulties of estimation problems, especially when considering practical constraints on inferential procedures; some ways this has played out in my research is in the study of inference under privacy constraints, distributed estimation with a limited communication budget, and stochastic approximation.
