Graduate Admissions

The Department of Statistics offers two graduate degree programs: Master of Science, including a Data Science track, and Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics.

Applicants applying from outside Stanford must visit Graduate Admissions before beginning the application process for complete application information and instructions.

External Admissions (2024-2025)

  • PhD Deadline: November 30, 2023 (Thursday) 11:59 PM PST
  • MS Deadline: November 30, 2023 (Thursday) 11:59 PM PST
  • Data Science Deadline: November 30, 2023 (Thursday) 11:59 PM PST

Graduate Admissions accepts applications to the Statistics graduate programs in autumn each year for matriculation beginning the following academic year. Students may only matriculate in autumn quarter. Applications will not be accepted after the published deadlines above. Applicants to the Statistics graduate program may apply either to the MS program or to the PhD program, but may not apply to both.

The Statistics Department recognizes that the Supreme Court issued a ruling in June 2023 about the consideration of certain types of demographic information as part of an admission review. All applications submitted during upcoming application cycles will be reviewed in conformance with that decision.

It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that they meet all eligibility requirements before applying. All application materials, including supporting documents, must be received by the application deadline.

Knight-Hennessy Fellowship

Join dozens of Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences students who gain valuable leadership skills in a multidisciplinary, multicultural community as Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS).

KHS admits up to 100 select applicants each year from across Stanford’s seven graduate schools, and delivers engaging experiences that prepare them to be visionary, courageous, and collaborative leaders ready to address complex global challenges. As a scholar, you join a distinguished cohort, participate in up to three years of leadership programming, and receive full funding for up to three years of your studies at Stanford.

Candidates of any country may apply. KHS applicants must have earned their first undergraduate degree within the last seven years, and must apply to both a Stanford graduate program and to KHS. Stanford PhD students may also apply to KHS during their first year of PhD enrollment.

If you aspire to be a leader in your field, we invite you to apply. The KHS application deadline is Wednesday, October 11, 2023. Learn more about KHS admission.

To be considered, you must apply to Knight-Hennessy Scholars by October 11, 2023, at 1:00pm Pacific Time, and separately apply to the Statistics Department by the department/program deadline.

Please note: Determination and notification of Knight-Hennessy awards is separate from department admission.
