Amanda has been recognized as one of four recipients of the School of Humanities and Sciences Dean's Award of Merit. This award began in 1999 to acknowledge the important role staff play in the success of the school and the university as a whole.

The International Statistical Institute is pleased to announce that Trevor Hastie and his student Hui Zou (2006, now full professor at the University of Minnesota) have been awarded the 2025 Founders of Statistics Prize for Contemporary Research Contributions in recognition of their influential paper,

The C. R. and Bhargavi Rao Prize honors outstanding and influential innovations in the theory and practice of mathematical statistics, international leadership in directing statistical research, and pioneering contributions by a recognized leader in the field.

Andrew Ilyas will join our community of Fellows at the start of the fall quarter. Andrew has completed a lengthy career at MIT — undergraduate, graduate, and PhD — and hopes to teach on topics of deep learning, general machine learning, algorithms, causal inference, optimization, and more.

A new appointment will join our department on July 1 (jointly supported by Stanford Data Science). Brian comes to us from a postdoctoral stint with the Columbia University Department of Statistics as well as a visiting researcher post with the University of Washington's Institute for Protein Design in Seattle.

The Department of Statistics learned that Professor Lai passed away in the early morning of Sunday, May 21st. As many of us knew, he had suffered from health setbacks in recent years, but this sudden news came as a great shock. Dennis returns to Stanford in January to become Associate Professor (Teaching) of Statistics. Since receiving his Ph.D. in 2015 under the advising of Jonathan Taylor, he most recently has been Associate Professor of Statistics and Affiliate Professor of Computer Science at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and a Senior Data Scientist at Google.

Two more Fellows will join the Statistics Department in September: Alden Green and Shuangping Li.
